How to Check Your Tire Pressure and Why It Matters

Tire pressure might not be the most exciting part of car maintenance, but it plays a big role in your vehicle’s safety, fuel efficiency, and performance. Fortunately, checking your tire pressure is quick, easy, and something every driver can do themselves with just a few simple tools.

Check the tire pressure with a Tire-Pressure Gauge

Why Tire Pressure Matters

Proper tire pressure ensures your tires wear evenly and your car handles correctly. Driving with under-inflated or over-inflated tires can lead to:

  • Poor fuel economy: Low tire pressure increases rolling resistance, which means your engine has to work harder—and burn more gas.

  • Uneven tire wear: Incorrect pressure shortens the lifespan of your tires, leading to premature replacements.

  • Safety risks: Improperly inflated tires reduce your vehicle’s braking ability and increase the risk of blowouts, especially at highway speeds.

How to Check Your Tire Pressure

1. Get a Tire Pressure Gauge

You can find a digital or manual tire pressure gauge at most auto parts stores or online. Many gas stations also offer gauges at their air pumps.

2. Know the Recommended PSI

Check the sticker inside the driver’s side door or your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the recommended pressure (measured in PSI – pounds per square inch) for your front and rear tires. Don’t use the number printed on the tire sidewall—that’s the maximum, not the recommended pressure.

3. Check Pressure When Tires Are Cold

Tire pressure increases as the tires warm up from driving. For the most accurate reading, check your tires when the car has been sitting for a few hours or before driving.

4. Use the Gauge

  • Remove the valve cap from the tire’s valve stem.

  • Press the gauge firmly onto the valve.

  • Read the pressure on the gauge and compare it to your recommended PSI.

  • Add or release air as needed.

5. Repeat for All Four Tires

Don’t forget to check your spare tire too—it’s useless if it’s flat when you need it most.
